hello.music – Sequel Pending

hello.music

Well it July is here and almost over, and I don’t have much to show for it yet. Here is my first attempt at a chord structure I have been throwing around. Sorry for the shitty synth lines, but I thought it needed something in there. Anyway, this one’s is called “Sequel Pending” and I assume that it will someday have a sequel added to it .. which at this point in time is in “pending” status. This is version .5:

UPDATE: 7/22

Ok, so I sat down and actually tracked out this whole thing.. complete with chorus, verses and sans drum loops. Now to fill in the rest…

Sequel Pending v2

  1. This certainly has potential… you just need to fill it out and perhaps we can add some actual instruments so you’re not so reliant on synth. By the way…are you using Live’s synth midi sounds? Which ones do you use? That is one aspect I am still reliant on Garageband for.

What would you like me to help out with?

  2. mike katzif: what would you like for your song?
    Aryn Crowley: hmm
Aryn Crowley: I need to establish more of a structure ..
    mike katzif: thats true
Aryn Crowley: or maybe just get a decent vocal line for it
mike katzif: you need to flesh this out
mike katzif: it ends way too quickly
    Aryn Crowley: right
Aryn Crowley: its just in sketch form
mike katzif: you need to develop more of a verse verse chorus verse chorus chorus approach
Aryn Crowley: I have those parts
Aryn Crowley: I will record it out today
    mike katzif: you have words?
Aryn Crowley: so I have a steady guitar chord going on
    Aryn Crowley: nope
mike katzif: what sort of song is it?
Aryn Crowley: but the chord structure is ready I think .. for verse chorus
    Aryn Crowley: open
    11:30 AM
mike katzif: you should do real drums on this
mike katzif: mixed w\ those electro ones
    Aryn Crowley: yea
mike katzif: and bring that synth down
Aryn Crowley: I think I need to change the tempo/ feel of it
    mike katzif: yes
mike katzif: you could do away with the analog synth altogether
mike katzif: lay down some more organic sounding chords
    mike katzif: organs, wurlitzers etc
    Aryn Crowley: good call
mike katzif: even if midi, make it sound warmer
    Aryn Crowley: right
mike katzif: record the chord structure once with a dark brooding organ
mike katzif: then double those same exact tracks but with a more mid range sound and instrument
mike katzif: so it locks up b\c its the same thing
mike katzif: but has different timbres to it
mike katzif: maybe have your existing AUK sounding melody be your melodic vocal line
mike katzif: and dont double it w\ any instrument
    Aryn Crowley: ok
Aryn Crowley: I think I am going to lay it down now
    Aryn Crowley: actually
    mike katzif: one question quickly
mike katzif: are you recording your synths using Live ?
    Aryn Crowley: yes
    Aryn Crowley: everything in live
    mike katzif: hmmm
Aryn Crowley: their selection is a little limited
mike katzif: are you happy w\ the sounds you have there?
Aryn Crowley: but I feel you can tweak the sounds more
    11:35 AM
mike katzif: i havent played w\ it too much
Aryn Crowley: I would like an expansion pack of sorts
Aryn Crowley: I think it would be helpful
mike katzif: but normally i just want to track quickly before i forget and not fool w\ live too much for midi
    Aryn Crowley: right
mike katzif: i think im going to by reason when v4 comes out
Aryn Crowley: but its not any harder than garage band
Aryn Crowley: just have to know where to look
mike katzif: i just mean w\ finding a sound i like
Aryn Crowley: and I find its a pain in the ars to export and retrack in Live after working in g-band for a song
mike katzif: where ive grown accostomed to the gband sounds
    Aryn Crowley: yeah
mike katzif: it doesnt take too long
Aryn Crowley: there are some decent ones in Live to use
Aryn Crowley: its where I get those drum sounds
mike katzif: they all sound so bad to mee
mike katzif: i like their drum sounds etc
mike katzif: but not the stuff for midi
Aryn Crowley: I will check into expansion packs
    mike katzif: meh
mike katzif: i dont want to pay for those if im just going to buy reason
mike katzif: and the abbey road expansion pack
Aryn Crowley: that’s what we need
    mike katzif: theyre making it
    mike katzif: its coming
mike katzif: all the abbey road instruments were recorded and sampled
    Aryn Crowley: thats awesome
    mike katzif: yes
mike katzif: i thought i told you that
mike katzif: that was the deciding factor for me
Aryn Crowley: i have heard about it
Aryn Crowley: when does it come out?
    mike katzif: sept or oct
    mike katzif: im buying it
    mike katzif: no question
    Aryn Crowley: fantastish

  3. This is coming along…its still wide open with many possibilities… Where do you think you want to take it from here? Are we in a folk month after our melancholy EP of June? Certainly seems a little more summery I suppose.

  4. Yeah , I suppose it could go folk.. As my main chordal instrument here is acoustic it can default to that sound.. I think my only real goal here is to make something that doesnt have a depressing vocal melody.. upbeat. summery.. sounds good to me.

  5. This is such a strange chord progression… certainly not standard in any context outside of being traditionally ‘Aryn.’
